16-year-old rookie lifeguard Ryder Williams is receiving widespread praise after rescuing a 10-year-old boy who was swept into dangerous surf at Seabright Beach in Santa Cruz, California.
The dramatic rescue took place on July 25, when powerful waves knocked the child into the ocean. Williams, who was on duty during his first season as a California State Parks lifeguard, immediately entered the water and held onto the boy through heavy surf for nearly two minutes until another lifeguard arrived to assist. The child was safely brought back to shore and later reunited with his family.
Video of the rescue quickly spread across social media, drawing national attention and praise for the teenager’s courage and composure under extreme conditions. Despite the recognition, Williams said he was simply doing the job he had been trained to do.
According to reports, Williams participated in several additional rescues later that same day as dangerous waves and rip currents affected California’s coastline.
U.S. President Donald Trump has announced plans to invite Williams and his family to the White House, where the teenage lifeguard is expected to receive a high civilian honor in recognition of his bravery.
